DO WE NEED ANOTHER SWADESHI MOVEMENT?
(An essay by Miss.Bhargavi, XII- A,TGHSS/Srirangam)
To be frank, a Big – No: we do not need any other 'Swadeshi movement' in the interest of our Nation.Such movement was necessary during the period of pre-independence as the political and economic situation of India was entirely different. But in the present era of Information Technology(IT) such movement is 'obsolete'.
Let we visualize the status of our country before independence, after independence and the present scenario in the IT era.
Status of India before Independence
India was under the colonial rule of Europeans.Political and economic life of our country was controlled primarily by British. Industrial revolution in western nations led to neo-imperialism due to which industrially advanced countries started to exploit the regions which were rich in raw materials.
India is one such region with abundant natural resources. Our resources were 'exported' to Britain, the finished products were 'imported' and 'marketed' back to us by the rulers. Also surplus goods in the foreign countries were dumped in India for business. Thus our nation was kept economically backward by the British for the benefit of their mother Nation. Broad area of our country, linguistic differences among neighbor regions, inadequate communication, illiteracy and lack of unity among Indians were taken advantage by the rulers.
Such selfish move was understood gradually by Indians which led to initiation of Swadeshi movement especially after Bengal Partition during the year1905. The movement was intensified during Gandhian Era from the year 1919 by our great leaders who fought for Independence. Use of videshi goods was discouraged and swadeshi Indian made goods were encouraged by us. Non-violence movement through Satyagraha by Mahatma Gandhiji agitated the rulers. We were forced to face the wrath of the rulers by violence pelted on us during other movements for freedom struggle.
Status of India after Independence
India got independence from British rulers with 'major injury' of partitioning a portion to Pakistan. Violence erupted between the body and soul of Hindus and Muslims. Non-violence movement was ridiculed and father of our nation was killed by the hardliners. Political selfishness among leaders led to terrorism in border statess like Kashmir. Inter states refused to co-operate themselves and with the centre. Our unity among diversity was challenged before the other nations.
The period of chaos immediately after independence was settled gradually by timely bold action plans by our leaders. But in spite of peace by linguistic division of states, Powerful Constitution, Panch-sheel with other nations and five year plans for the economic development, the growth of India was 'slow'. The might of the 'brain power' of Indians were not exposed to other nations till the era of Information Technology (IT) after 1990s.
Swadeshi movement in the above period 'slowed down' due to tremendous growth of global communication, standard of living, availability of quality products from other nations at competitive rates.'Brain drain' created by the intellectuals in selfish-need of money also became a challenge for the development of our nation. Lack of moral ethics and commitment to produce quality products by the Indian traders also forced the Indian consumers to opt for a product of their choice.
Present era of Information Technology (IT)
The present era of communication and information technology encourages 'globalization' by integrating the international markets for goods and services, technology, finance and labour. The intellectual part of the Indians in development of the above concept among the countries in the globe is considerable. The rate of 'Brain drain' is slowing down due to growing money-making potentials in our nation itself. Tremendous development of E-Commerce (EC),E-Data Exchange (EDI) and E-Funds Transfer (EFT) were a boon to domestic and international trade and industries. Realisation among countries is taking place to integrate their country with the world economy.Foreign direct Investment (FDI) is encouraged to augment the domestic investable resources and also stimulates exports.
The Indian traders are now realizing the need for 'Total Quality Management (TQM)' to produce quality products for the survival among global war of competition. They are forced to spend for R & D for the development of innovative skills and new products to compete with MNCs established in India.
Future India – vision 2020
Certain demerits due to globalization and admission of MNCs like retarding growth of employment for home nations, monopoly powers and profit maximization can be effectively controlled by strict government policies. The transport power of our nation by way of road, rail, water, air and containerization should be fully utilized keeping in mind the welfare of the Indians rather than to others in India for business.
With right thinking and right political move at right time India will stand in a commanding position as a 'Global Leader' making us a proud member of our Nation. As visualized by our President Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam India will command peace and prosperity among other nations before the year 2020!
Conclusion
Due to the above reasoning we do not need another Swadeshi movement. The concept itself is obsolete and meaningless as there is no videshi to compete with. Videshis and Swadeshis are one and the same in the present world scenario. There only one concept called 'Win-Win',only one thinking called 'Positive thinking' and only one move towards 'SUCCESS'!
